Phyllis Cohen

Certified Teacher, 2022

Phyllis Cohen began her career as an award-winning actress/singer and composer for theatre, radio and film, working in English and French across Canada. She was invited to create the Singing for Actors curricula of study for the Graduate and Undergraduate Departments of Theatre at York University in Toronto, where she went on to teach for nine years. Certified to teach English as a Second Language, she had been working with corporate and private clients across a variety of sectors on public speaking and effective communication before being invited, early in 2019, to teach the General American Accent Workshop at the Professional Actors Lab in Toronto. That same year, she began studying speech and dialects with Knight Thompson Speechwork. Since then, her services have expanded to include coaching an ever-increasing number of accents to actors privately and in online workshops. She has also contributed accents to the International Dialects of English Archive.
