Both were brilliant in understanding our needs\, as well as filling in any “gaps” we might have felt we would have missed from an in-person version. [They] covered all the bases of what we would have and could have wanted from an in-person workshop. As a bonus\, by watching how they managed challenges\, I learned how to effectively and easily teach online! Having all of our sessions recorded and accessible forever is an incredible gift\, and I know I will be returning to it often to re-learn and make sure the nutrients of the sessions really sink in. I will be recommending KTS online or otherwise to anyone who might be interested in something like this. “ \n– Lydia Flock \n  \n\n\n\nWorkshop Costs:       \n\n\n\n\nVASTA Members    \n\n\n$800*\n\n\n\n\nANY Union Members\n\n\n$800**    \n\n\n\n\nNon-members\n\n\n$900***\n\n\n\n\n\n* Use the code “vasta” when checking out.\n** Use the code “unionpride” when checking out.\n*** If you’re interested in repeating an “Experiencing…” workshop that you’ve already taken\, contact us for discount code.\n\n\n\n\nThere is also a PART ONE ONLY OPTION for $500 ($400 with union membership)! \nThis three-day session (Part One) focuses on: \nAwareness and practice of precise articulation action \nThe physical actions that produce all the sounds of the world’s languages—”Omnish” \nVocal Tract Posture—the articulatory basis for the sounds in accents and languages \nThis session will also prepare the participant for Part Two\, which includes detailed phonetic transcription and an exploration of the skills of formal and informal speech. SUMMARY:KTS Webinar #25: The Dialects of Gender and Sexual Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Monday\, February 24th\, at 2:00 p.m. PST for our first webinar of 2020 on “The Dialects of Gender and Sexual-Orientation” hosted by KTS and Fitzmaurice Voicework teacher\, Adriano Cabral\, and Chicago Voice Center founder and Fitzmaurice Voicework teacher\, Diane Robinson. \n\nIn this webinar\, we will share contemporary research on the expression of gender identity and sexual-orientation as a “dialect.” We will demonstrate examples of voice and speech work that we have used to empower the LGBTQIA actor and non-actor to express their identity in performance and presentation. The webinar will include time for discussion of questions that arise from the work\, including but not limited to: \n\nCan voice and speech work advocate for the expression of the performer’s gender and sexual-orientation in performance?\nCan considering gender and sexual-orientation expression as “accent” and “dialect” help us encourage the actor to bring their whole self to the creation of a character?\nHow has work with LGBTQIA clients formed and informed these questions?\nWhat do we think about being asked to help a non-LGBTQIA actor portray an LGBTQIA character? Or to help an LGBTQIA actor “pass” as a non-LGBTQIA character?\nHow can non-LGBTQIA coaches and teachers mentor LGBTQIA coaches when working with the community?\nWhat are some current positive and negative casting trends\, and ways forward in representation?\n\nThis webinar will be geared towards actors who identify as LGBTQIA and the voice teachers and coaches working with them. Attendees will come away with an enhanced understanding of the extent to which vocal behaviors contribute to self-expression and character creation. \n\n\n\nAdriano Cabral is Assistant Professor of Voice and Movement at the University of Nevada\, Reno. They hold their BA in Musical Theatre from Rhode Island College and MFA in Theatre Performance from Arizona State University. They are a certified teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework® and Knight-Thompson Speechwork. Professional coaching credits include Arvada Center for Arts and Humanities and the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Specialties include LGBTQ+ actor training\, Reiki\, bodywork\, trans voice. Publications: Here’s How to Teach Voice and Communication Skills to Transgender Women from Plural Publishing. Affiliations: VASTA (Board Member)\, ATHE\, AEA (EMC). www.adriano-cabral.com \nDiane Robinson is a voice coach who works with gender diverse adults and children\, and the wellness professionals who serve them\, to construct and express gender identity in voice and speech. In addition to individual and group lessons\, Diane trains clinicians working with gender diverse adolescents\, and presents nationally on gender and voice. She has completed training with Northwestern University\, WPATH\, and Supporting Gender Diverse Speakers: A Course for Voice Clinicians. \nRecent creative work includes performing with Chicago Dramatists and Piven Theatre Workshop\, leading accent improv workshops at Second City\, dialect coaching for NBC’s Chicago Fire and Chicago theater company Blue Bird\, and coaching college productions at Roosevelt\, Columbia College Chicago\, Trinity\, LSU\, Cal State Long Beach and UTEP. Diane holds an MFA in Acting from the University of California\, Irvine\, and is a member of WPATH and VASTA and Actors Equity. She’s a certified Fitzmaurice Voicework® teacher and has completed KTS Experience Speech\, Experiencing Accents and Phonetics Intensive. She can be reached at diane@chicagovoicecenter.com \n\nThe Registration fee is $10 to cover hosting costs.  \nAll webinars are recorded\, so\, if you can’t attend live\, you can still register and watch at your convenience! \nOnce a month\, every member of the KTS community is invited to connect\, collaborate\, and share all things KTS related.  If you have taken Experiencing Speech or have been introduced to fundamental Experiencing Speech practices\, or if you are interested in this aspect of the work\, this webinar is for you!  Your KTS questions\, solutions\, phobias\, phenomena\, details\, observations\, obsessions\, and fancies are all invited to the conversation. Our aim for the Webinar Series is to keep us connected on a regular basis\, sustain our KTS conversations\, and strengthen our growing KTS community. \nOur webinars were inspired by VASTA’s forum on “Things that Work.” \nWanna Lead a Webinar? \nWe welcome volunteer facilitators and lead presenters for our monthly webinars.  Is there a topic you would like to research and/or share your experience on? Would this be a useful line item on your CV?  Contact the KTS Webinar Series organizers Foster Johns and Keri Safran at ktswebinars@gmail.com to schedule you as a KTS webinar facilitator.

SUMMARY:KTS Webinar 24: Formality and Informality in Speech - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:**RESCHEDULED** \nPlease note that\, due to a scheduling conflict\, this Webinar is being rescheduled for next Monday\, November 18 at 3pm PST/6pm EST.  Because of the inconvenience\, we will be making it a free Webinar.  If you have already registered\, your fee will be refunded.  We ask that you still sign up through the ktspeechwork.org event page.  Thank you! \nPlease join us on Monday\, November 18\, 2019 at 3pm PT/6pm ET for our next Webinar on “Formality and Informality in Speech: Part 2!” hosted by KTS co-founder Phil Thompson. \nWhen we talk of speech and speech training as a discipline\, it’s easy to assume an agreement between teacher and student about what these terms mean.  But as we examine more deeply what our goals and values might be in this regard\, things can become quite complicated. Our ideas of what it means to be understood by an audience in acoustically challenging spaces may often be underscored by a whole history of assumptions\, biases\, personal experiences and attitudes about speech  that make our seemingly straightforward goal of intelligibility a bit more complex.  \nAs Dudley wrote\, it’s useful for our propositions to be “examined regularly\, poked at occasionally to enliven them\, soundly thrashed if required\, rearranged when necessary\, dusted off\, polished\, and generally looked after.” In this Webinar\, Phil seeks to lay out this cluster of ideas around KTS terms and  approaches to Intelligibility\, Linguistic Detail\, Formal and Informal Speech\, and subject them to a bit of loving interrogation. \nIn our last encounter with these ideas Phil Thompson shared some of  his thoughts on this topic. \nThis time he’s like to open up the conversation to discuss any thoughts or questions the KTS community might have.  \n**As a way of facilitating the conversation please add your questions to a KTS Google document that will be sent to you once you’ve registered.** \n  \nThe Registration fee is waived for this webinar! You can register here:  https://ktspeechwork.org/event/kts-webinar-24-formality-and-informality-in-speech-part-2/ \nAll webinars are recorded\, so\, if you can’t attend live\, you can still register and watch at your convenience! If you are interested in attending this Webinar\, but missed Part 1\, don’t worry!  You can receive the video link\, and all of Phil’s supplemental materials\, by sending $10 to knightthompsonspeechwork@gmail.com thru PayPal.  If you have any questions about this process\, please reach out to the same address\, or ktswebinars@gmail.com\, and we will happily walk you through it.   \nQuestions?
