DESCRIPTION:Knight-Thompson Speechwork is pleased to announce we will be offering a three-week Teacher Certification program in Knight-Thompson Speechwork in the summer of 2022\, July 18-August 5\, taught by Co-Directors Phil Thompson & Andrea Caban. The program will be held in person in Irvine\, CA (with a possible online hybrid option). Sessions will take place five days a week\, Monday through Friday\, except the final week which may end on Saturday the 6th\, depending on cohort size. Prior to the start of the program on July 18th\, there will be 3-4 required webinars and various deliverables\, to be scheduled\, starting on or around June 1\, 2022.\nProgram Goals\nThe purpose of the Certification is to make sure that its participants possess: \n\n\nA thorough understanding of the Knight-Thompson approach to speech training.\nA thorough knowledge of the International Phonetic Alphabet and an ability to use it effectively in teaching.\nA thorough understanding of the Knight-Thompson approach to the methodology of accent training.\nAn ability to productively use research resources for accent acquisition\, as well as efficiently learn and effectively model new accents.\nA demonstrated ability to teach this material effectively and with full understanding.\nA demonstrated ability to use this approach creatively in teaching and coaching.\n\n\n  \nThe emphasis in the Certification program will be on individual development\, and all participants will receive substantial individual attention and mentoring. Participation in the Certification program does not guarantee certification: in some cases we may require additional work to demonstrate understanding and teaching skill. Admission to the Teacher Certification Program is open only to participants who have already taken Experiencing Speech\, Experiencing Accents and a Phonetics Intensive. They met at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama where they both studied on the MA and MFA programme in Voice Studies. Each chose to research teaching strategies for the neurodiverse (Dyslexia/ Dyspraxia/ AD(H)D) professional actor and acting student and made this their dissertation focus. Both practitioners have now embedded their research into their practice to aid the marginalised learner in voice\, accent and acting work.

As an actor\, she has appeared on a host of stages in New York and across the country as well as in film and television. Open to anyone who has taken Experiencing Accents\, this workshop is designed to further familiarize participants with the application of the lexical sets to accent work and to tackle ambiguities around their use through play\, practice\, and community skill-building. Participants of all experience levels are welcome\, from those seeking to expand their teaching strategies as well as those wanting to deepen their own understanding of how to use the lexical sets. \nThis course will be online only. All documents and audio materials will be shared through an online platform. All sessions will be recorded and shared with participants. \n\nEarly Bird Registration at $350 USD is available through December 14th\, 2021. His professional practice focuses on accent coaching/design\, with numerous credits on award-winning theatre\, television and film productions\, including designing the Belter accent for Prime Video’s The Expanse. He has presented frequently at the annual VASTA conference and published articles and reviews in the Voice and Speech Review. He was the co-host (with Phil Thompson) of Glossonomia: Conversations on the Sounds of Speech. His research interests lie in the pedagogy of accent training for diverse populations. He is working on an Open Educational Resource (aka “book”) on using Wells’ Lexical Sets for Accents. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Lakewood is a London based accent modification and dialect coach who has a private coaching practice and teaches at various drama schools. He is currently teaching accents and phonetics at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and at Mountview Academy. He  has previously worked at ALRA (North and South) and Millennium Performing Arts. Production coaching at LAMDA includes Miss Julie by Amy Ng and King Charles III by Mike Bartlett. In addition to his coaching he works as an actor and since training at LAMDA has worked for BBC1\, BBC3\, Netflix\, Apple\, Amazon and recently filmed a recurring role on ‘Masters of the Air’ produced by Spielberg and Tom Hanks. She has over 25 years experience teaching and training actors in voice\, speech and accent both nationally and internationally. Jude initially trained as an actor at Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and later gained an MA in Voice Studies from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Jude has spent years studying\, mastering\, performing and coaching numerous accents. Her extensive work with phonetic transcription has led her to developing illustrations and animations to help visualise the articulatory gestures required to acquire new pronunciation patterns.
