SUMMARY:KTS Webinar #49: Experiencing Accents Book Launch!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting celebration of the release of the next Knight-Thompson Speechwork text\, written by Phil Thompson\, Tyler Seiple\, and Andrea Caban. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nExperiencing Accents: A Knight-Thompson Speechwork® Guide for Acting in Accent presents a comprehensive and systematic approach to accent acquisition for actors. It lays out an accessible and effective set of tools\, exercises\, and theoretical frameworks grounded in current linguistic science\, as well as more than two decades of teaching\, actor training\, and coaching developed by Knight-Thompson Speechwork®. \n\n\n\nThis book dismantles the notions that accents exist on a spectrum of good and bad or that “neutral\,” “general\,” or “standard” can serve as ideals for speech. By de-centering elitist and authoritarian worldviews\, it gives actors a path to mobilize their innate language abilities to acquire any accent\, relying on descriptive and experiential knowledge. The innovative approach of the Four Ps – People\, Prosody\, Posture\, and Pronunciation – builds cultural competence that honors accents as they exist in the world\, increases the physical and perceptive skills of the actor\, and provides a rich variety of applications to encourage fluid and embodied accent performance. Each of the Four Ps are investigated and practiced separately and then synthesized in the art of the performer\, allowing actors to address the complexity of acting in accent through a deliberate and sequential layering of skills\, rendering the final expression of their technique meticulously accurate and deeply authentic. \n\n\n\nOrganized into fifteen modules to correspond with a typical semester\, Experiencing Accents is perfect for Theatre students in voice\, speech\, and accents courses\, along with working actors interested in improving their accent work. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOn Sunday 5th November 11am PDT/2pm EDT/7pm GMTTo convert this meeting to your time zone\, click here. \n\n\n\nRegistration will close 12 hours prior to the event and participants will then receive Zoom link information. SUMMARY:KTS Webinar #46.5 Acting and Prosody  – Prosodic Presumptions in Actor Training
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, the 20th of August at 11am PST/2pm EST/7pm BST.  \n\n\n\nTo convert this meeting to your time zone\, click here. \n\n\n\nWe are thrilled to invite Anne Whitaker for a special webinar on prosody. Anne is an excellent voice and accent coach who specialises in prosodic work for actors. She will be speaking about her development of prosodic exercises for actors and why this facet of voice work has been largely untapped. Anne’s research partner Linguist Beatrice Szczepek Reed\, King’s College\, will join to discuss their interdisciplinary work. Beatrice will share her work on how prosody functions in conversation as a realisation of social action\, rather than the revealing of internal emotional states. Together they will propose how that applies to the acting work. Anne will share the exercises they are developing to help actors of all stages acquire and utilise skills in pitch\, rhythm\, and intonation to enrich their voice and text work in a way that lines up with linguistic research. \n\n\n\nAnne Whitaker \n\n\n\nAnne Whitaker is a voice and accent coach based in the UK. Her recent theatrical work includes Durham Shakespeare Festival\, Oklahoma!\, and Matilda as well as tv/film Wheel of Time\, We Were the Lucky Ones\, and Back in Action. Anne is also a guest voice coach at several drama schools\, Rose Bruford Southwest\, Royal Central School for Speech and Drama\, and Mountview\, where she enjoys bringing her professional expertise and developing research to developing actors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBeatrice Szczepek Reed \n\n\n\nBeatrice Szczepek Reed is Professor of Linguistics at King’s College London\, where she is the co-director of the Centre for Language\, Discourse and Communication. Her research is concerned with the phonetic and prosodic features of natural conversation. She has written the textbook Analysing Conversation. An Introduction to Prosody (Macmillan\, 2011) and the monograph Prosodic Orientation in English Conversation (Palgrave\, 2006)\, as well as over 50 peer-reviewed publications on naturally occurring interaction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegistration for this webinar will be $10. Registration will close 24 hours prior to the event and participants will then receive Zoom link information. All registrants will also receive the recording and post-webinar survey after the meeting has ended and been processed. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about this space\, please contact ktswebinars@gmail.com.

Admission to the Teacher Certification Program is open only to participants who have already taken Experiencing Speech\, Experiencing Accents and a Phonetics Intensive. Prospective participants in the Teacher Certification Program also must have some experience incorporating this approach in their own teaching or coaching before going on to Certification. \nApplication Process\nSubmit your application via this link. The first review will happen after November 10\, 2022; the second review will happen after January 15\, 2023; and the third will happen at the close of applications on April 24\, 2023. Priority will also be given to applicants who can be present in the room for the three weeks of the program. If an applicant would like to be in residence for at least one week and remote for some other part of the Cert\, that will be considered. Please refer to BST work day schedule. \n*KTS acknowledges this accent breakdown is your intellectual property and will be used for application review purposes only. \nPlease note that application to the Cert does not guarantee admittance.\n  \nProgram Costs\nUpon acceptance\, the enrollment fee for the Certification is $4\,000 USD. If you are accepted into the program\, payment instructions will be provided. \n  \n  \nPayment Deadlines\nIn order to plan effectively for these workshops\, it’s important to have a clear sense of the commitment of potential participants. What is the philosophy behind the process? How does it differ from working with an actor? And the question that every client will ask\, without fail: how long does it take? Theatre work includes ‘Grace’ in Waiting for the Host (Pangdemonium); ‘Da Jie’ in Lao Jiu (Theatre Practice); ‘Amy in Company (Dream World Productions). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJames Bailey is a KTS trained accent coach and LAMDA trained actor\, as well as a teacher of stage combat for the BADC. He holds a degree in Archaeology and Anthroplogy from the University of Oxford\, and draws on the sensitivity of cultural understanding required for effective anthropoligical discourse\, which is in alignment with KTS’ own approach. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this webinar will be $10. Registration will close 24 hours prior to the event and participants will then receive Zoom link information. All registrants will also receive the recording and post-webinar survey after the meeting has ended and been processed. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about this space\, please contact ktswebinars@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:KTS Webinar #43: Creating and Coaching Conlangs and Conlects
DESCRIPTION:Conlangs (constructed languages) and Conlects (constructed dialects) appear to be here to stay in the mediated universes of fantasy\, space opera\, and science fiction. Our panel— Keith Higinbotham\, Marina Tyndall\, Marion Déprez\, and Eric Armstrong—discusses their experiences of creating\, designing\, coaching\, and team-coaching languages and accents built-to-order. They’ll address the challenges of building a language/lect that no one has ever heard before\, with sounds that may be unfamiliar in the mouths of the actors and point out some of the pitfalls they’ve tried to avoid along the route. Even made-up accents live in a cultural context\, so they’ll share their thoughts on how to deal with the on- and offset “politics” of how best to position our work. Together\, our coaches will explore strategies for counteracting\, and sometimes embracing\, the gravitational pull of the familiar while trying to boldly go where no language/accent has gone before. (Cue the theremin music!) \n\n\n\nOn Sunday\, 26th of March at 10am PST/1pm EST/6pm GMT.  \n\n\n\nTo convert this meeting to your time zone\, click here. \n\n\n\nEric Armstrong is Chair of the Department of Theatre & Performance at Toronto’s York University\, where teaches voice\, speech\, accents\, and text in the Acting & Performance program; he has taught full-time in universities for 29 years in the US and Canada.
