SUMMARY:TEACHER CERTIFICATION #9
DESCRIPTION:Knight-Thompson Speechwork is pleased to announce we will be offering a three-week Teacher Certification program in Knight-Thompson Speechwork in the summer of 2023\, July 31st-August 18th\, taught by Co-Directors Phil Thompson & Andrea Caban. The program will be held in person in London\, England. Sessions will take place five days a week\, Monday through Friday\, 9:00am to 4:00 or 5:00pm BST. Prior to the start of the program\, there will be three required webinars on weekend days between May 15th and July 15th. A list of required and recommended reading can be found here.\nProgram Goals\nThe purpose of the Certification is to make sure that its participants possess: \n\n\nA thorough understanding of the Knight-Thompson approach to speech training.\nA thorough knowledge of the International Phonetic Alphabet and an ability to use it effectively in teaching.\nA thorough understanding of the Knight-Thompson approach to the methodology of accent training.\nAn ability to productively use research resources for accent acquisition\, as well as efficiently learn and effectively model new accents.\nA demonstrated ability to teach this material effectively and with full understanding.\nA demonstrated ability to use this approach creatively in teaching and coaching.\n\n\nThe emphasis in the Certification program will be on individual development\, and all participants will receive substantial individual attention and mentoring. Participation in the Certification program does not guarantee certification: in some cases we may require additional work to demonstrate understanding and teaching skill. Admission to the Teacher Certification Program is open only to participants who have already taken Experiencing Speech\, Experiencing Accents and a Phonetics Intensive. Prospective participants in the Teacher Certification Program also must have some experience incorporating this approach in their own teaching or coaching before going on to Certification. \nApplication Process\nSubmit your application via this link. Then email an accent breakdown* and a link to an accent modelling sample to knightthompsonspeechwork@gmail.com. \nRequirements for Accent Breakdown: include a section for each of the 4Ps as taught in Experiencing Accents; include cut sound samples and phonetic transcription for the Posture section and each of the token sounds in the Pronunciation section. An expanded version of a breakdown from Experiencing Accents coursework is acceptable. \nRequirements for Accent Modelling Sample: A 2- to 3-minute fully-embodied performance of a memorized text in the accent from your breakdown. \nApplications open October 18\, 2022 and will close on April 24\, 2023. There will be three rounds of application review by the KTS Council. The first review will happen after November 10\, 2022; the second review will happen after January 15\, 2023; and the third will happen at the close of applications on April 24\, 2023. Priority will be given to early applications. Early applicants accepted into the cohort will receive feedback on their application and highly discounted re-taker pre-requisite workshop access. Priority will also be given to applicants who can be present in the room for the three weeks of the program. If an applicant would like to be in residence for at least one week and remote for some other part of the Cert\, that will be considered. Please refer to BST work day schedule. \n*KTS acknowledges this accent breakdown is your intellectual property and will be used for application review purposes only. \nPlease note that application to the Cert does not guarantee admittance.\n  \nProgram Costs\nUpon acceptance\, the enrollment fee for the Certification is $4\,000 USD. If you are accepted into the program\, payment instructions will be provided. \n  \n  \nPayment Deadlines\nIn order to plan effectively for these workshops\, it’s important to have a clear sense of the commitment of potential participants. For that reason\, we ask for a deposit of $500 to secure your place in the workshop. This is due upon acceptance into the program. The full payment is due June 1st\, 2023. If your plans change\, and you are unable to attend\, we will refund any payment less $100 if you inform us before June 1st\, 2023. After that date\, however\, no refunds are possible. Please plan accordingly. \n

SUMMARY:KTS Webinar #46: Is “Accent Modification” Really Just Learning a New Accent?
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, the 30th of July at 11am PST/2pm EST/7pm BST.  \n\n\n\nTo convert this meeting to your time zone\, click here. \n\n\n\nJoin KTS teachers\, James Bailey and Petrina Kow\, as they explore ‘accent modification’. What is the philosophy behind the process? How does it differ from working with an actor? And the question that every client will ask\, without fail: how long does it take? These questions\, and more\, will be considered in our workshop\, ‘Is “Accent Modification” really just learning a new accent?’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPetrina Kow is a Voice\, Accents and Presentation Coach. She is the first and only Singaporean certified with the Fitzmaurice Voicework® and the Knight Thompson Speechwork®methods. Petrina has extensive experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and organisations. She runs workshops on presentation skills\, voice\, and storytelling at corporate companies and has taught voice and accents at many theatre companies and institutions like NAFA and Lasalle. She is a much sought after voice actor and voice-over director for animation and commercials. Petrina started out her career on radio and was the co-host on various top morning shows. Theatre work includes ‘Grace’ in Waiting for the Host (Pangdemonium); ‘Da Jie’ in Lao Jiu (Theatre Practice); ‘Amy in Company (Dream World Productions). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJames Bailey is a KTS trained accent coach and LAMDA trained actor\, as well as a teacher of stage combat for the BADC. James teaches accents on the foundation course at Young Actors’ Theatre in London\, has taught the ‘Accents for Actors Online’ summer school at RADA and assessed students at Rose Bruford College on their accent acquisition. Alongside this\, he works extensively with corporate clients and individuals on accent modification through his company\, The Accent Centre (www.theaccentcentre.com). He holds a degree in Archaeology and Anthroplogy from the University of Oxford\, and draws on the sensitivity of cultural understanding required for effective anthropoligical discourse\, which is in alignment with KTS’ own approach. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this webinar will be $10. Registration will close 24 hours prior to the event and participants will then receive Zoom link information. All registrants will also receive the recording and post-webinar survey after the meeting has ended and been processed. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about this space\, please contact ktswebinars@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:KTS Webinar #43: Creating and Coaching Conlangs and Conlects
DESCRIPTION:Conlangs (constructed languages) and Conlects (constructed dialects) appear to be here to stay in the mediated universes of fantasy\, space opera\, and science fiction. Our panel— Keith Higinbotham\, Marina Tyndall\, Marion Déprez\, and Eric Armstrong—discusses their experiences of creating\, designing\, coaching\, and team-coaching languages and accents built-to-order. They’ll address the challenges of building a language/lect that no one has ever heard before\, with sounds that may be unfamiliar in the mouths of the actors and point out some of the pitfalls they’ve tried to avoid along the route. Even made-up accents live in a cultural context\, so they’ll share their thoughts on how to deal with the on- and offset “politics” of how best to position our work. Together\, our coaches will explore strategies for counteracting\, and sometimes embracing\, the gravitational pull of the familiar while trying to boldly go where no language/accent has gone before. (Cue the theremin music!) \n\n\n\nOn Sunday\, 26th of March at 10am PST/1pm EST/6pm GMT.  \n\n\n\nTo convert this meeting to your time zone\, click here. \n\n\n\nEric Armstrong is Chair of the Department of Theatre & Performance at Toronto’s York University\, where teaches voice\, speech\, accents\, and text in the Acting & Performance program; he has taught full-time in universities for 29 years in the US and Canada.
