DESCRIPTION: A Three-Day Intensive in the Phonetic Transcription\nWith Erik Singer\n\nKnight-Thompson Speechwork is a highly effective\, skills-based approach to speech and accent training for actors that places emphasis on developing the speaker’s detailed awareness of and engagement with the skills that make up language. By combining a rigorous investigation of those skills with playful\, experiential exercises\, this work moves quickly and effectively past the usual interference that can make speechwork difficult for many students.This intensive three-day workshop\, for actors\, voice/speech teachers\, clinicians\, and coaches\, will offer focused instruction on narrow phonetic transcription\, consistent with the approach laid out in Dudley Knight’s “Speaking with Skill“\, and  the six-day Experiencing Speech workshop.  Knight-Thompson Speechwork places special emphasis on the physical actions that produce speech sounds\, and this intensive is designed to develop participants skills in hearing\, modeling\, and transcribing these sounds. \n\nThe workshop will be taught by Erik Singer\, Associate Director of Knight-Thompson Speechwork. \n\n\n \n\nThree days\, May 2 – 4 \n\nAwareness and practice of precise articulation action.\nProducing and recognizing all the sounds in language.\nPractice with detailed (narrow) IPA phonetic transcription.\nDetailed instruction and practice with IPA diacritics\, including those found on the “Extended” IPA chart.\nThe use of technology (software\, apps) to manipulate speech samples for transcription.\n\nThis workshop is ideal for those who have taked Experiencing Speech and/or Experiencing Accent and are looking to improve their transcription skills and mastery of descriptive phonetics. It may be of particular interest to those interested in Certification\, as mastery of narrow transcription is one of the criteria for certification in KTS. \n(This workshop is not currently required before the certification program\, but will be in the future.) \nThe Phonetics Intensive will be held in New York City at a midtown studio TBD. \nWorkshop Costs\n\n\n\nVASTA Members\nNon-members\n\n\n$375\n$425\n\n\n\nIn order to plan effectively for these workshops\, it’s important to have a clear sense of the commitment of potential participants. For that reason we ask for a deposit of $100 to secure your place in the workshop. This is due by April 1st. The full payment is due April 20th.
