SUMMARY:KTS Webinar #43: Creating and Coaching Conlangs and Conlects
DESCRIPTION:Conlangs (constructed languages) and Conlects (constructed dialects) appear to be here to stay in the mediated universes of fantasy\, space opera\, and science fiction. Our panel— Keith Higinbotham\, Marina Tyndall\, Marion Déprez\, and Eric Armstrong—discusses their experiences of creating\, designing\, coaching\, and team-coaching languages and accents built-to-order. They’ll address the challenges of building a language/lect that no one has ever heard before\, with sounds that may be unfamiliar in the mouths of the actors and point out some of the pitfalls they’ve tried to avoid along the route. Even made-up accents live in a cultural context\, so they’ll share their thoughts on how to deal with the on- and offset “politics” of how best to position our work. His professional practice focuses on accent coaching/design\, with numerous credits on award-winning theatre\, television and film productions\, including designing and coaching the Belter accent and language for Prime Video’s The Expanse.  His Open Educational Resource\, Lexical Sets for Actors bit.ly/lexsets4actorsis available for FREE to support your teaching and coaching. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeith Higinbotham is a freelance accent and voice coach with an MFA in Voice Studies from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama where his thesis explored accent creation for fantasy worlds. Keith regularly teaches at some of London’s leading drama schools whilst running a successful private coaching business. He has provided accent and dialect coaching on a number of stage shows and has begun his foray into the world of TV. Alongside accent coaching\, Keith is a voice and movement director for video games and is currently working on a AAA project.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarina Tyndall is a freelance voice and dialect coach based in London and trained at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Recent TV coaching projects include Star Wars: Andor\, Killing Eve\, Interview With The Vampire\,Line of Duty\, This England\, Gangs of London\, and Honour.  Film projects include Murder On The Orient Express\, Tenet\,  Rogue One\, Firebrand\, Death On The Nile\, The Rhythm Section\, A Haunting In Venice (2024)\, Inferno\, Mindhorn\, and Burnt.  \n\n\n\nMarion Déprez is an experienced teacher and became a French language coach for the film industry. A graduate in French from the university of La Sorbonne\, Paris IV\, she worked for over 10 years teaching French as a foreign language\, specialising in pronunciation. Déprez’s work for films comprises of coaching actors in acting in French. She also translates lines in realistic conversational French (or historically accurate) and provides alternative versions with suitable phonetics to specific actors. Marion moved to the UK in 2005  to complete a Master I and a diploma from La Sorbonne in French as a foreign language. She then trained in London as a performer and director in Jacques Lecoq School of Physical Theatre and started a career as an actress/ director and a French teacher. She has designed a pronunciation course for Sussex University and is developing an online French pronunciation course.

DESCRIPTION:Knight-Thompson Speechwork is pleased to announce we will be offering a three-week Teacher Certification program in Knight-Thompson Speechwork in the summer of 2022\, July 18-August 5\, taught by Co-Directors Phil Thompson & Andrea Caban. The program will be held in person in Irvine\, CA (with a possible online hybrid option). Sessions will take place five days a week\, Monday through Friday\, except the final week which may end on Saturday the 6th\, depending on cohort size. Prior to the start of the program on July 18th\, there will be 3-4 required webinars and various deliverables\, to be scheduled\, starting on or around June 1\, 2022.\nProgram Goals\nThe purpose of the Certification is to make sure that its participants possess: \n\n\nA thorough understanding of the Knight-Thompson approach to speech training.\nA thorough knowledge of the International Phonetic Alphabet and an ability to use it effectively in teaching.\nA thorough understanding of the Knight-Thompson approach to the methodology of accent training.\nAn ability to productively use research resources for accent acquisition\, as well as efficiently learn and effectively model new accents.\nA demonstrated ability to teach this material effectively and with full understanding.\nA demonstrated ability to use this approach creatively in teaching and coaching.\n\n\n  \nThe emphasis in the Certification program will be on individual development\, and all participants will receive substantial individual attention and mentoring. Participation in the Certification program does not guarantee certification: in some cases we may require additional work to demonstrate understanding and teaching skill. Admission to the Teacher Certification Program is open only to participants who have already taken Experiencing Speech\, Experiencing Accents and a Phonetics Intensive. Prospective participants in the Teacher Certification Program also must have some experience incorporating this approach in their own teaching or coaching before going on to Certification. \nApplication Process\nSubmit your application via this link. Then email an accent breakdown* and a link to an accent modelling sample to knightthompsonspeechwork@gmail.com. \nRequirements for Accent Breakdown: include a section for each of the 4Ps as taught in Experiencing Accents; include cut sound samples and phonetic transcription for the Posture section and each of the token sounds in the Pronunciation section. An expanded version of a breakdown from Experiencing Accents coursework is acceptable. \nRequirements for Accent Modelling sample: A 2- to 3-minute fully-embodied performance of a memorized text in the accent from your breakdown. \nApplications open August 8\, 2021 and will close on February 15\, 2022. There will be two rounds of application review by the KTS Council. The first review will happen after October 1\, 2021\, and the second will happen at the close of applications on February 15\, 2022. \n*KTS acknowledges this accent breakdown is your intellectual property and will be used for application review purposes only. \nPlease note that application to the Cert does not guarantee admittance.\n  \nProgram Costs\nUpon acceptance\, the enrollment fee for the Certification is $3\,500 USD. They met at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama where they both studied on the MA and MFA programme in Voice Studies. Each chose to research teaching strategies for the neurodiverse (Dyslexia/ Dyspraxia/ AD(H)D) professional actor and acting student and made this their dissertation focus. Both practitioners have now embedded their research into their practice to aid the marginalised learner in voice\, accent and acting work.

Mr. Cotten has been featured in The NY and LA Times for his work as Dialect Coach on Regina King’s\, One Night in Miami along with recognition for his work with Leslie Odom Jr.’s Academy Award Nominated performance as the legendary Sam Cooke. Film/Television: He is Dialect Coach on the Canadian debut of CBC & BET’s period drama\, The Porter; Amazon’s upcomingThe Peripheral. He is currently in production as Acting and Dialect Coach on\, The Exorcist\, trilogy directed by David Gordon Green. Theatre/Stage: Mr. Cotten is also set to be Voice and Dialect Coach at The Shaw Festival’s Canadian Premier of August Wilson’s\, Gem of the Ocean\, set to run August of 2022. His goal as an artist and educator is to connect cultures around the world in the arts through authentic storytelling. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEliza Simpson: As a speech and dialect coach Eliza has worked in film and TV productions on Netflix\, Hulu\, & Apple TV. Her most recent studio credits include prep for Focus Features’ “Blue Bayou” and Warner Bros’ “Fantastic Beasts 3.” She is currently post-production for an unnamed project with Ubisoft games. Eliza is a certified teacher of Knight-Thompson speechwork and a head coach & brand ambassador for BoldVoice.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nErik Singer is a dialect coach for film and television. Recent work includes Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis\, Barry Levinson’s The Survivor\, Rodrigo García’s Raymond and Ray\, and Netflix’s Slumberland\, all due out this year. His Webby award-winning videos for Wired discussing accent work in films and language and accent variety more generally have been viewed over seventy million times. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nErin Nicole Washington is an actor and a dialect coach for actors in TV & film.  \n\n\n\nShe holds a BFA from SUNY Purchase Acting Conservatory\, an MFA from Harvard/ART in Acting and have taught at Voice & Speech at Purchase and Columbia College LA. She has coached American & international actors including Regina King\, Amirah Vann and projects for Disney & the theme parks\, CW\, Hulu & Netflix. In addition to coaching television & film\, she has prepared clients for Broadway & LA theater\, televised award shows and business presentations\, academic talks and tech pitches. When she is not dancing with dialects\, or traveling around the globe performing & training\, she is completing her Alexander Technique certification.
