SUMMARY:KTS Webinar #25: The Dialects of Gender and Sexual Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Monday\, February 24th\, at 2:00 p.m. PST for our first webinar of 2020 on “The Dialects of Gender and Sexual-Orientation” hosted by KTS and Fitzmaurice Voicework teacher\, Adriano Cabral\, and Chicago Voice Center founder and Fitzmaurice Voicework teacher\, Diane Robinson. \n\nIn this webinar\, we will share contemporary research on the expression of gender identity and sexual-orientation as a “dialect.” We will demonstrate examples of voice and speech work that we have used to empower the LGBTQIA actor and non-actor to express their identity in performance and presentation. The webinar will include time for discussion of questions that arise from the work\, including but not limited to: \n\nCan voice and speech work advocate for the expression of the performer’s gender and sexual-orientation in performance?\nCan considering gender and sexual-orientation expression as “accent” and “dialect” help us encourage the actor to bring their whole self to the creation of a character?\nHow has work with LGBTQIA clients formed and informed these questions?\nWhat do we think about being asked to help a non-LGBTQIA actor portray an LGBTQIA character? Or to help an LGBTQIA actor “pass” as a non-LGBTQIA character?\nHow can non-LGBTQIA coaches and teachers mentor LGBTQIA coaches when working with the community?\nWhat are some current positive and negative casting trends\, and ways forward in representation?\n\nThis webinar will be geared towards actors who identify as LGBTQIA and the voice teachers and coaches working with them. Attendees will come away with an enhanced understanding of the extent to which vocal behaviors contribute to self-expression and character creation. \n\n\n\nAdriano Cabral is Assistant Professor of Voice and Movement at the University of Nevada\, Reno. SUMMARY:KTS Webinar 24: Formality and Informality in Speech - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:**RESCHEDULED** \nPlease note that\, due to a scheduling conflict\, this Webinar is being rescheduled for next Monday\, November 18 at 3pm PST/6pm EST.  Because of the inconvenience\, we will be making it a free Webinar.  If you have already registered\, your fee will be refunded.  We ask that you still sign up through the ktspeechwork.org event page.  Thank you! \nPlease join us on Monday\, November 18\, 2019 at 3pm PT/6pm ET for our next Webinar on “Formality and Informality in Speech: Part 2!” hosted by KTS co-founder Phil Thompson. \nWhen we talk of speech and speech training as a discipline\, it’s easy to assume an agreement between teacher and student about what these terms mean.  But as we examine more deeply what our goals and values might be in this regard\, things can become quite complicated. Our ideas of what it means to be understood by an audience in acoustically challenging spaces may often be underscored by a whole history of assumptions\, biases\, personal experiences and attitudes about speech  that make our seemingly straightforward goal of intelligibility a bit more complex.  \nAs Dudley wrote\, it’s useful for our propositions to be “examined regularly\, poked at occasionally to enliven them\, soundly thrashed if required\, rearranged when necessary\, dusted off\, polished\, and generally looked after.” In this Webinar\, Phil seeks to lay out this cluster of ideas around KTS terms and  approaches to Intelligibility\, Linguistic Detail\, Formal and Informal Speech\, and subject them to a bit of loving interrogation. \nIn our last encounter with these ideas Phil Thompson shared some of  his thoughts on this topic. \nThis time he’s like to open up the conversation to discuss any thoughts or questions the KTS community might have.  \n**As a way of facilitating the conversation please add your questions to a KTS Google document that will be sent to you once you’ve registered.** \n  \nThe Registration fee is waived for this webinar! You can register here:  https://ktspeechwork.org/event/kts-webinar-24-formality-and-informality-in-speech-part-2/ \nAll webinars are recorded\, so\, if you can’t attend live\, you can still register and watch at your convenience! If you are interested in attending this Webinar\, but missed Part 1\, don’t worry!  You can receive the video link\, and all of Phil’s supplemental materials\, by sending $10 to knightthompsonspeechwork@gmail.com thru PayPal.  If you have any questions about this process\, please reach out to the same address\, or ktswebinars@gmail.com\, and we will happily walk you through it.   \nQuestions? Our aim for the Webinar Series is to keep us connected on regular basis\, sustain our KTS conversations\, and strengthen our growing KTS community. \nOur webinars were inspired by VASTA’s forum on “Things that Work.” \nWanna Lead a Webinar? \nWe welcome volunteer facilitators and lead presenters for our monthly webinars.  Is there a topic you would like to research and/or share your experience on?  Would this be a useful line item on your CV?  Contact the KTS Webinar Series organizers Jeff Parker and Julie Foh at ktswebinars@gmail.com to schedule you as a KTS webinar facilitator.

Building from exercises described in Speaking With Skill\, Jeffrey Parker (and a few brave student volunteers) will introduce\, describe\, and demonstrate instructional activities that deepen the work while coming from a sense of play and gamesmanship. There will be time for questions\, discussions\, and sharing of exercises at the end of the webinar\, so if you have any exercises\, handouts\, or ideas\, please feel free to bring them to the party! \n\nThe Registration fee is $10 to cover hosting costs. \nOnce a month\, every member of the KTS community is invited to connect\, collaborate\, and share all things KTS related.  If you have taken Experiencing Speech or have been introduced to fundamental Experiencing Speech practices\, or if you are interested in this aspect of the work\, this webinar is for you!  Your KTS questions\, solutions\, phobias\, phenomenons\, details\, observations\, obsessions\, and fancies are all invited to the conversation.

SUMMARY:KTS Webinar #11 - Process\, Product\, and Principles\, Perhaps: Adapting KTS to Short-Term Goals
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Monday\, March 19th\, at 3pm (EST) for our 11th Knight-Thompson Speechwork Webinar! Tyler Seiple will offer: “Process\, Product\, and Principles\, Perhaps: Adapting KTS to Short-Term Goals.” \nThis online discussion will focus on how we adapt the foundational principles of Knight-Thompson Speechwork into the many different educational and coaching scenarios in which we find ourselves employed. How do we frame\, discuss\, and explore KTS in a three-year graduate program as well as a one-off coaching session\, an undergraduate workshop as well as an ongoing public class? Tyler will share his own experience as well as invite discussion with any and all who wish to share their insights as to how to make KTS the most effective philosophy possible for sharing our collective knowledge of — and passion for — speech.
